“70 hrs of footage and 40 to 45 days it took to shoot.” Said Farida Pacha
Talking about the making of the film, the maker explained, how in the beginning it was very difficult for her to shoot, as people were camera cautious. To make them comfortable she used to sit with the families and show them the videos that she has shot of them. She had been investigating for 5 years, took notes to make things smooth, but the cameraman and the rest of the crew were not used to them, and it affected them and made things stressful at first. But when the family saw the footage, it became a bonding experience for them.
There were moments when communication was difficult since their Gujrati was different, and this became the only barrier. They prepared everything but a curry, which she got fed up with. For her, they did very few changes while editing the shots that they have as she wanted to keep things natural and wanted to present exact reality to the public.
While talking about the editing process Miss Pacha mentioned that it had a lot to do with the editor. Sound and editing are crucial, and she was fortunate to have a skilled editor. It took her four months to complete. She had one editor at first who was fine, but he didn't suit her style, so she recruited another who took on the job later. She wanted to be alone, so she created a scene that was precisely how she imagined the movie to be, and since then she and Kathi had been working together.
Every sound used in the movie was very much intentional as they did not have many options. The constant bump was the most difficult obstacle, and when you made a cut, there was the sound of the bump, which sounded different every time and had a specific pattern. “I couldn't do anything about the sound of the pump, which had practically become the film's heartbeat, but we'd play with it,” Farida added.
Once they wanted a photo from a high vantage point to capture the expanse, so they built a tower, but it collapsed, which was one issue they faced, but innovative solutions are the only thing that can save a movie in such situations.
Farida also talks about how every film has its own journey and gives different experiences. She mentioned that it is difficult to shoot all the films from the same angle and look at them from the same viewpoint. Style changes, way of shooting changes but what remains the same is your will to make a movie.
